5th & Main
This
Mixed Use development has become an instant landmark of East Nashville.
5th & Main is a six floor structure featuring lofts, flats and
townhomes. It is conveniently located near the interstate loops, both
downtown Nashville and the eclectic life of Historic Lockeland Springs.
Although
many structures of the East Nashville neighborhood were originally
destroyed in the east Nashville fire of 1916, the area still maintains
a unique mixture of antebellum buildings. One of the two locally zoned
historic preservation districts in the neighborhood is Historic
Edgefield. All new construction, additions, demolition, alterations and
fences must be first approved by the Metro Historical Commission,
helping the neighborhood keep its timeless feel. Interestingly enough,
the East Nashville area has been featured on the Home and Garden
Television (HGTV) network during Bob Vila’s “America” and in the
network’s “Our Place” series.
The other historic district of
East Nashville is the Lockeland Springs Historic neighborhood, a
turn-of-the-century streetcar suburb situated just two miles northeast
of downtown Nashville. In 1998, a tornado ravaged its way through the
historic neighborhood, destroying at least 300 homes. Thankfully, the
neighborhood has rebounded stronger than ever, and new homes and
Nashville, TN downtown lofts are being built every day, in addition to
the renovations to existing homes.
Both historic districts of
East Nashville are linked together by a busy retail area known as Five
Points. Five Points boasts several restaurants, a coffee shop, hardware
store, city library, and a neighborhood watering hole. This flourishing
area is developing rapidly as more and more commercial investments are
made. Five Points is also home to several art galleries, such as the
Art & Invention Gallery and its adjoining studio, Garage Mahal.
